About the Program

Join us as we welcome Andrew McCaskill, senior VP of global communications & multicultural marketing for Nielsen. We will explore data and research pointing to key demographic shifts in the United States – communities of color, millennials, gender/race and sexual orientation. Communicators today must not only be developing communications strategies for inclusive audiences – but rather entire multicultural audiences, with messaging through a new lense. If brands and companies lack a multicultural strategy, then there’s no growth. Our marketplace today is becoming more and more about multicultural consumers, who are driving decisions and carry more buying power.

About the Speaker

Andrew McCaskill is an accredited communications and crisis management executive experienced in delivering award-winning communications and public relations campaigns at Fortune 500 companies and highly successful technology start-ups.

At Nielsen, McCaskill currently leads the company's communications and marketing efforts to and around diverse communities around the world. He also oversees the company's Global Media Relations Center of Excellence, providing guidance and counsel to Nielsen’s media relations teams in 106 countries on proactive public relations and reputation management issues.

He holds a B.A. in English from Morehouse College and an M.B.A. in Marketing from Emory University.

Adversity is a given for us all. At some point in our lives, we all will encounter a period of pain that tests our resolve and endurance. Those of us who thrive as creative thinkers are often able to create meaning from these challenging times and find inspiration in the struggle. Come hear how Jerry Hoak has used his abilities as a creative thinker to find strength and growth in the most trying of times.

Jerry Hoak joined The Martin Agency in 2017 after spending more than a decade in New York working at Droga5, Taxi and Ogilvy. Recently named EDC, Managing Director at Martin, he has been helping lead the agency to become even faster, more collaborative and diverse. He believes the best advertising respects an audience's time by delivering entertainment, utility and purpose. His proudest advertising moment came in 2015 when the podcast Freakonomics featured his Prudential campaign in an episode titled "How to Make a Smart Ad." It was not a paid endorsement. Despite winning the Mega Millions Jackpot in 2017, he continues to work in advertising. That's not true. He is married with two cats and a dog named Glitter, and he is a board member of the Make-A-Wish foundation of Greater Virginia. That is true.

Using Story to Connect Brands with Humans

May Signature Speaker Series: Stefan Mumaw

Story building: Using Story to Connect Brands with Humans

The term ‘storytelling’ has become an agency buzzword of late. From creative shops to marketers, it seems everyone is a storyteller these days. And the fact is, they’re right. We are all storytellers. But few of us are story builders, capable of not only understanding the structure of story but able to use it to connect the character of a brand to the people that consume it. Story has a form, one that Stefan Mumaw is going to break down for you. He’ll lay out the structure of story and use real-world examples to show how each story component is used to build an emotional bridge between brand and consumer. Bring a few tissues, story has a knack for producing both tears of laughter and empathy and Stefan will use both to show just how powerful story can be.

AIGA Richmond Presents Emily Herr – Mural Workshop & Creative Process

Wed, May 9, 2018
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM EDT

The Veil Brewing Co.
1301 Roseneath Road
Richmond, VA 23230

Join AIGA Richmond at the Veil Brewing for a great night of learning about the art of murals from local muralist, EMILY HERR! After Emily gives a talk about design and execution of murals and her creative process, we will be collectively painting Emily's mobile studio that will be parked at the Veil! Each attendee will also be able to take home a print of one of Emily's murals. You won't want to miss this great opportunity to learn about mural design from a local expert!

Painting murals is an excuse for Emily to explore new settings for illustrative visual art, work closely with an ever-changing variety of people, and push her physical and creative limits. As part of her creative practice, she travels as often as possible to seek new landscapes and visual paradigms, from Chilé to Iceland, from Qatar to California. Self-employed since graduation from VCU, she pursues continuing education in the form of workshops across the US and abroad, as well as initiating ambitious projects that guide the shape of her client work - most recently designing and building a mobile artist studio, and then launching a traveling mural project called “Girls! Girls! Girls!” to better represent womxn in public art.
